Eublepharidae – Eye-lid Geckoes

The family of the eyelid geckoes (Eublepharidae) currently consists of 36 species. The name is derived from the Greek eublepharos = with beautiful eyelids. The Eublepharidae are the only gecko family with eyelids, however, it's not the top, but the lower lid that moves when closing. The animals are almost exclusively ground-dwellers being located in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa and America.
As ground-dwellers Eublepharidae have no adhesive toe pads. Previously regarded as subfamily of the Geckonidae, this morphologically more primitive group became a separate family of gecko-likes (Gekkota). The females lay two hard-shelled eggs several times a year. Young animals may differ considerably in their colouring and patterns from the adult animals in some cases.
For the terraristic hobby the Eublepharidae are of particular importance; besides of the bearded dragon Pogona vitticeps the leopard gecko Eublepharis macularius might be the most commonly kept lizard worldwide, and other species of the group have a large distribution in the hobby as well.

Eublepharidae – Lidgeckos
